Outside the Box: Swagelok Specialty Regulators
Pressure regulators are complex components that achieve a relatively simple task – they reduce the pressure of a gas or liquid from a source, such as a cylinder or compressor, to a lower value required by a device downstream, such as an analyzer. Pressure-reducing and back-pressure regulators are used in thousands of common applications; however, some applications require additional complexity and functionality – Swagelok Specialty Regulators have you covered.
Gas Cylinder Changeover (KCM)
Some critical applications require the continuous flow of gas. With a typical pressure-reducing regulator, once the supply source (bottle) is depleted, the system must be taken offline while the depleted bottle is switched out. The KCM Series is a two-stage gas delivery system that ensures continuous flow of gases. When one supply drops below the changeover pressure, the selector regulator automatically switches the gas feed from the depleted supply to the alternate supply.
The KCM can be ordered to switch from one supply to another at one of three different inlet pressures – 100, 250 and 500 psig (6.8, 17.2 and 34.4 bar) – called changeover pressures. If both supplies drop below the changeover pressure, the assembly functions as a single-stage regulator, depleting both supplies at the same time. The KCM Series regulator assembly minimizes the supply-pressure effect caused by depleting gas supply, and eliminates costly system downtime and maintenance expense of continuously monitoring the gas supply.
Electrically Heated Vapourizing (KEV)
The KEV Series is an ATEX, IECEx and CSA certified, electrically heated regulator that is designed to vapourize liquid samples or preheat gas samples to prevent them from condensing before entering a downstream analyzer system. It features a heating element that is in direct contact with the process fluid for maximum thermal efficiency, and is removable for repair or cleaning, thus reducing replacement costs and minimizing downtime. The low-volume vapour chamber allows for fast response across the entire pressure control range. Rated for use in hazardous areas, the KEV Series is highly compact, making it ideal for use in scenarios where space is limited, such as winterized enclosures.
Tank Blanketing (RHPS TB)
Tank blanketing, also known as padding, is the introduction of an inert gas into the vapour space of a storage tank. The pressure requirement is usually low because higher pressures do not significantly improve results and waste expensive blanketing gas. Tank blanketing can be used in applications to:
- Increase product shelf like and prevent tank corrosion
- Improve safety
- Ensure compliance with environmental standard
- Maintain the structural integrity of a tank
Swagelok offers two types of RHPS Series tank blanketing regulators – pressure-reducing regulators and vapour recovery regulators (back-pressure controllers). Gas blanketing and vapour recovery are two techniques that can safely and effectively control volatile vapours in tanks and other process vessels, preventing them from escaping into the atmosphere. The combination of gas blanketing and vapour recovery devices maintains a constant pressure in the tank’s vapour space above the stored fluid. As a result, there will always be a constant pressure in the tank during pumping operations or when the temperature changes.
